What is a PAG doc?

What is a Pediatric-Adolescent Gynecologist? PAG for short … it’s a “thing!”

I’m frequently met with a quizzical look when I tell people I’m a pediatric-adolescent gynecologist – PAG for short. Many people even doctors are surprised to learn that “PAG” is a “thing.” I start by explaining that PAG doctors are Obstetricians and Gynecologists that have undertaken sub-specialty training to provide gynecology care from childhood, through adolescence and young adulthood.

It’s still a relatively young field, the first accredited fellowships started to train OB-GYNs who wanted to specialize in PAG in 1990. I’m proud to say that was at the University of Louisville, where I also worked before moving to Florida. Each year North America produces only 15-20 new PAG doctors, so there are not as many of us as are needed. Most work in academic settings, hospitals attached to a medical school or a large health system, and some pursue private practice.

PAG practices provide a broad spectrum of gynecological care. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that the initial GYN visit for screening and prevention should take place between ages 13 and 15 – most parents of teens are unaware of this recommendation – YOU may even be unaware of this recommendation. PAG docs talk about the benefits and risks of hormone therapies not only for birth control, but also for managing menstrual pain or abnormal periods, encourage preventive services, optimize menstrual management for teens with developmental differences or chronic illnesses, address pelvic pain and anxieties about fertility and future reproductive health. PAG docs are expert in discussing adolescent development, body changes and healthy sexual relationships with teenagers and those that care for them.

At The GYN Space I see patients who reside anywhere in Florida.  But if you don’t live in Florida and are looking for a PAG doc, like myself, ask your teen’s Pediatrician or Family Medicine doctor to make a referral or visit the North American Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology’s website and search for a PAG provider PAG provider link.
